KNORR Student Chef of the Year Competition

Last week, Dundalk Institute of Technology hosted the 21st annual KNORR Student Chef of the Year competition. Seven student chefs from across the island battled it out to be crowned the KNORR Student Chef of the Year 2018.

The competition is the biggest competition of its kind in Ireland and allows young, up-and- coming chefs the chance to demonstrate their talent and culinary flair in front of leading national and international food professionals.

H+A was delighted to aid in the planning and execution of a great day and national competition.

This year’s competition celebrated Ireland’s first Michelin starred pub, Wild Honey Inn located in the heart of The Burren in Co. Clare.

The winning student was Jade Ainscough of Institute of Technology Tallaght, with Glenn McCourt from Dundalk Institute of Technology coming in second place and Stephen Deasy from Limerick Institute of Technology placing third.

Judging the dishes on the day was Mark McCarthy, Unilever Food Solutions Business Development Chef, Aidan McGrath, Chef Patron, Wild Honey Inn, Corinna Hardgrave, food, travel and wine writer and Michael McNamara, chef lecturer at Dundalk Institute of Technology.

H+A Marketing + PR has worked alongside Unilever Food Solutions for the last number of years, managing the KNORR Student Chef of the Year event. The competition is a great opportunity for young chefs who will be entering the Irish food sector to exhibit their skills.

Student chefs will be entering the industry at an interesting time. A recent report commissioned by Bord Bia advises that food accounts for 80-85% of turnover in pubs and hotels across the country. Not only that, the Restaurant Association of Ireland has reported a shortage of chefs in Ireland.
