6 Things I’ve Learned in 6 Months

6 months on from joining H+A Marketing + PR, am I a PR guru? Not yet. Am I sipping on a bottle of Bollinger or Veuve Clicquot on long lunches? Most definitely not. Is the job what I thought it would be? Yes and no. Am I constantly learning? Absolutely! So here are six things I’ve learned in 6 months.

  1. Never assume anything
    “It is wiser to find out than to suppose”. This is a hard, but invaluable one to learn on the job. Regardless of how stupid you feel asking something, whether it be internally or client facing, it is ALWAYS better to ask before going further and having to deal with the consequences later!
  2. No two clients are the same
    For an agency, clients are the lifeblood of all you do – That’s nothing new. What has really struck me is the cordial and rewarding rapport that can be built with a client. PR can get a bad rep when compared to other communication and marketing functions and you know what? It’s understandable. Earned media can be difficult to measure in tangible results, but generally a client will know and appreciate when you have gone above and beyond. After all, editorial coverage makes up for the difficulty in securing it, with the value and impact it has for your client.
  3. No two days will ever be the same
    Which is perfect if you get itchy feet from predictability and sitting at a desk all day! One morning recently, I found myself in a 5-star hotel, assisting at an international conference one of our clients was hosting. That afternoon, I was pulling up my sleeves in a local park mixing mud and water for a video shoot… Who said PR was all Cava and rubbing shoulders?
  4. Jump into the deep end and keep swimming
    While excitement comes with unpredictability, stress can also accompany it. I can honestly say that it’s better to be thrown into the deep end and learn on the job. PR is demanding, that’s a given. But there is no greater feeling than pulling something off and realising that there was no need to panic in the first place… That is until you’re thrown into a deeper end the next time!
  5. Proof, proof and proof again
    Regardless of an increasing and prolific use of social media in communications, good and snappy writing skills are still king. You not only need good writing skills, you also need to have the ability to recognise your audience and the platform you are reaching them on, all the while maintaining the authentic voice and values of your client. The beauty of being part of a close-knit agency is that there is always someone at hand to sanity check your reams of press releases and social media posts. What’s more, someone can always offer a fresh and alternative perspective, that enhances content for your client.
  6. Finally, always remember that it’s PR not ER
    A firm favourite of mine from a wise Account Director. No matter how busy and snowed under you are, if you’re starting out in a good agency they will want you to succeed and support and guide you as much as possible. In the meantime, just keep smiling amidst the occasional frantic confusion and commotion and make a strong cup of tea!
