The Week in Social - February 5, 2016

WhatsApp Reaches 1 Billion Monthly Users

As if Facebook isn't a big enough entity in itself, the now Facebook-owned app WhatsApp has reached over 1 billion users every month! Founded in 2009, WhatsApp appeal grew rapidly throughout the following years. By 2011 it had broken the top 20 app on the App Store in the U.S and two years later was being used by over 200 million people worldwide each month!

On the 1st of February 2016 it was announced that WhatsApp had surpassed 1 billion users per month mark, a monumental feat for the messaging service.

It's hard for us to imagine there being much growth left in terms of monthly unique users for WhatsApp but saying that, it is owned by Facebook so we wouldn't rule anything out just yet.

Facebook Friends Stories

Facebook turned the big 1-2 this week. Yes, can you believe it? Zuck's little social networking site the facebook is 12 years old!

Facebook, being Facebook, didn't want to celebrate alone and so gave it's twelfth birthday more of a community feel by creating #FriendsDay.

Friends day enabled users to share a short video of pictures of them with their friends. It was a successful venture by Facebook as #FriendsDay was trending online throughout the day on Thursday.

Twitter users looked a bit envious to say the least.

In Other News

Since Teresa Mannion's famous "unnecessary journeys" weather report we've felt a little unfulfilled from our more recent reports. Teresa's report showed her dedication to the cause informing the people of Ireland not to "swim in the sea" or "take trips on treacherous roads" among other warnings.

This report showed the same courage in stormy weather however, it ended slighly differently...

Ok we must admit that this is a skit for YouTube duo Craig & Aimee. It did give us a good laugh though!

And Finally...

The story that has been on everyone's lips. Yes, the one you've all been waiting for, our very own Luke bought a wok!

When asked about the occasion Luke said,"It's just one of those days that you'll never forget. I can imagine it's up there with buying your first car or home. Everyone remembers their first wok. It's a milestone in my life and I'm looking forward to the next one..."

It's nice to see that some people are easily pleased.
